Data Recovery FAQ

What file system should I choose to format my drive with?

  • Windows users should use NTFS over FAT32, for increased security and support for files over 4GB.
  • Mac users should use HFS+.

Only for drives that are used to transfer data between different systems does the use of FAT32 still make sense, as both Windows and Macs can read and write FAT32 (Mac OS X currently can read - but not write - NTFS).

However, with additional software Windows can read Mac's native HFS+ file system, and Macs can also write to NTFS volumes.
